Welcome to the Church

1. Welcome to the Church

Lyrics

Break off for me!
Me!
Break off for me!
Me!

We’re too loud where the Word is silent
We don’t realize we’re a sleeping giant
Let’s just take a good look at this body
All of these parts, but we stay in a pile

Splintered, divided
You did more than I did
Lost, confused
We have all been used

Don’t throw all of this away
It’s not what’s in it for me
Broken hearts don’t heal with rage
This is a hospital, not a stage

Unity doesn’t mean uniformity
We should have got the warranty
United we fell, divided we stand
Let’s take a break, I’ll give you a hand

Don’t tear the stitches out again
I’m not your enemy
This is a hospital, my friend
But it’s not what you thought it’d be

Splintered, divided
You did more than I did
Lost, confused
We have all been used

Don’t throw all of this away
It’s not what’s in it for me.
Broken hearts don’t heal with rage
This is a hospital, not a stage

It’s not what’s in the church for me
It’s what’s in me for the church
Not all who preach can make you whole
Don’t burn the bridge that saves your soul

Prioritization
Participation
A congregation
A praying nation

Don’t throw all of this away
It’s not what’s in it for me.
Broken hearts don’t heal with rage
This is a hospital, not a stage

Meaning

“Welcome to the Church” is about… the church.

There’s church cliques, church hurt, expulsion, false teachings, and plenty of other things not mentioned that all make up what people see as the church. (1 Corinthians 1:10–13; Galatians 5:19–21)

We know it’s not a building, but we treat it like one. (Acts 17:24; 1 Corinthians 3:16–17)

We have hurt people at church and been hurt by people at church. (James 3:2; Ephesians 4:32)

Sometimes we defend the church when there is nothing defendable about it. (Matthew 7:15–16; 1 Timothy 5:20)

Other times we throw away the church because of something one person at a church building did to us. (Hebrews 10:24–25; Colossians 3:13)

And often, we just break off and go start a new church or denomination because that one wasn’t exactly how WE wanted it to be. (1 Corinthians 3:3–7; Philippians 2:3–4)

The point is, as Christians, we need the church. We should add to the church. We are the church. (Romans 12:4–5; 1 Peter 2:4–5)

That doesn’t mean we have to stay at a church with false teaching. Or that we have to accept poor behavior from others because they’re part of the church. (2 Timothy 4:3–4; Titus 3:10)

We are called to love God and love others. That’s the environment we need in the church. (Matthew 22:37–39; John 13:34–35)

We can’t change other people; we can only be the church Jesus called us to be. (Ephesians 4:1–3; Romans 12:18)
